CLIWASEC Cluster meeting

Water security in the Mediterranean region in the frame of Climate Change

Faculty of Engineering - Cagliari

2nd February, 2011

Three Projects.jpg

The provisional programme foresees that the first two day will be devoted to the Joint Assembly of WASSERMed, CLIMB and of CLICO representatives at the Aula Magna of the Engineering Faculty at the University of Cagliari. (see the agenda)

The Joint Assembly will be followed by a Stakeholder Meeting, involving local actors, policy and decision‐makers, where the dissemination and stakeholder engagement concepts of the 3 projects will be discussed, as well as concerns and efforts of the local society towards the mitigation of security threats arising from climate change.

On February 3rd, stakeholder meetings will continue, to allow further involvement of local actors in the WASSERMed Case Study processes.

JOINT ASSEMBLY: On the 2nd of February 2011, partners from the clustered FP7 projects CLIMB, WASSERMed and CLICO will meet in Sardinia (Aula Magna of the Engineering Faculty at the University of Cagliari) to discuss on the impacts of Climate Change and the possible adaptation strategies.

The topic will be addressed from three different points of view, reflecting the structure of the three projects, aiming at forming a comprehensive representation of the Mediterranean region.
CLICO (Climate Change, Hydro-conflicts and Human Security) focuses on the political and social responses to the threat of water scarcity, while CLIMB (Climate Induced Changes on the Hydrology of Mediterranean Basins) focuses on scientific knowledge about current and future water availability in the Mediterranean. Both projects rely on Regional Climate Models (RCM) to obtain realistic projections of climate change, including an assessment of frequency and magnitude of extreme events.
WASSERMed focuses on the direct and indirect impacts of climate change on water availability, allocation and use in the Mediterranean area, highlighting implications in critical water use sectors: water services in urban areas, industry, agriculture, and tourism, and exploring economic implications of water scarcity at the local and the Mediterranean region scales.
All three projects draw insight on specific aspects of the issues faced through the analysis of Case studies in the Mediterranean region.

STAKEHOLDER MEETING: On the 3rd of February 2011, the Cluster participants will present their respective projects and discuss the Sardinia Case Studies. WASSERMed will outline the approach used to the local stakeholders, developing through their suggestions a conceptual framework, describing risks arising from climate change. The framework, which will serve as the basis for future modeling and identification of potential adaptation options, will incorporate changes in tourist flows, urban development and agricultural practices, as well as other factors that could increase the vulnerability of the local water system and the economy of the area.
