5th WASSERMed Workshop

Workshop on water-related security threats, climate change and adaptation options for Syros Island, Greece

 17-18 June 2011

Location: Cultural Centre of Hermoupolis, Syros

The “WASSERMed Workshop on water-related security threats, climate change and adaptation options for Syros Island, Greece” pertains to the 2nd round of stakeholder events organized within the framework of the WASSERMed project. Following from a series of 4 workshops, organized by the Project in Tunisia, Egypt, Sardinia and Jordan, the Syros workshop continues the dialogue with stakeholders, decision and policy-makers to integrate policy perspectives and disseminate project results on the quantification and mitigation of water-related security threats in the light of anticipated climate changes.

The specific objectives the event are to:
·      Identify plausible futures, considering climate change impacts on tourism and agriculture, key economic sectors of insular areas;
·      Discuss and consolidate the development and application of water balance models;
·      Identify, together with stakeholders, potential adaptation options to address future climate risks;
·      Explore effective ways for communicating project outcomes towards the policy sphere.
The Syros event will also constitute an important check point in the development of all WASSERMed Case Studies: it will consolidate progress made in the first 18 months of the Project towards the analysis of climate change impacts on strategic sectors and water resources, and provide further insight on the identification and evaluation of adaptation options and policies, suitable to local contexts.
