Three Projects.jpgThe CLIWASEC Cluster, “Climate Change Impacts on Water and Security (in Southern Europe and neighbouring regions)” has been established among three FP7 Research Projects which were selected for funding through the 2009 FP7 Call for proposals: CLIMB and WASSERMed, which address Theme 6 (“Environment, including Climate Change), and CLICO, addressing Theme 8 (“Socioeconomic Sciences and Humanities”). The main objective of the Cluster, which brings together a critical mass of scientists from 44 partner institutions, is to identify and foster scientific synergies and to establish a more efficient policy outreach strategy, also forming a comprehensive representation of issues faced in the Mediterranean
region. CLICO (Climate Change, Hydro‐conflicts and Human Security) focuses on the political and social responses to the threat of water scarcity, while CLIMB (Climate Induced Changes on the Hydrology of Mediterranean Basins) focuses on scientific knowledge about current and future water availability in the Mediterranean. All three projects draw insight on specific aspects of the issues faced through the analysis of Case studies in the Mediterranean region.

Major building blocks of the collaboration in CLIWASEC include scientific exchange and review, the organization of joint annual assemblies, a dissemination plan for presenting the results of the three projects and the establishment of a cluster project web‐portal, which will also host information on other relevant projects. In order to initiate and maintain a sound and successful dissemination process, regional, national and international stakeholders and policy bodies will be invited to express their research needs and recommendations through targeted events and communications. A first step involved the organization of a Joint Assembly of CLICO, CLIMB and WASSERMed, on January 28th 2010, at the occasion of the WASSERMed Kick‐Off Meeting in Cairo. The Joint Assembly was aimed at exploring ways to enhance synergies among the three projects, also through Case Study networking.
Synergies and feedbacks are further enhanced through meetings between the three Project coordinators, the forthcoming Joint Assembly of the three Projects in Sardinia, and the production of a soon‐to‐be released Joint Paper, describing the state‐of‐the‐art and research undertaken by the cluster. The latter will be communicated to IPCC in spring 2011, contributing to the 5th IPCC Assessment Report.

In the Cluster Projects, the analysis of climate change impacts on available
water resources and security is targeted on Southern Europe
and neighbouring regions. The Case Studies of the three Projects,
which are marked in the map on the right, have been selected according
to project specific criteria, and are complementary in either
scope, region or scale.
